Which businesses need to file a DBA?

Updated: Aug 16, 2022

If you are operating your business under a name that is not your legal name then your business will need to file for a DBA at the county or state level.

You will also need to file a DBA if you have an LLC or corporation that will operate under a different business name that is not the legal business name you registered when you created your LLC or corporation. This is the name that appears on your articles of organization (for LLCs) or articles of incorporation (for corporations).

DBA stands for "doing business as" and is also known as:

  • Fictitious Business Name

  • Assumed Name

  • Trade Name

A DBA can be filed by sole proprietorships, partnerships, limited liability companies, and corporations.

If you're unsure if your business needs to file a DBA, visit your county's website or state's website and ask a representative.
